Guns are a result of the problem. Sadly there are countless accounts of heinous acts of manic violence throughout secular and salvation history. In approximately 3 B.C. Herod had new born baby boys under the age of two put to death by the sword in an effort to kill the Messiah. In 2000, Al Qaeda killed over 3000 without a single gunshot being fired. The problem is, was and always will be mankind’s alienation from God. And again sadly, until that changes we will continue to bear the burden of the agonizing grief and mourning of Newtown, Aurora and Columbine. If we continue to remove God from our everyday lives this will be the result. If we continue to marginalize God’s presence in our lives and the lives of our children this will be the outcome. If we, as a society, continue to worship at the altar of self gratification, we become more like satan and less like Jesus. We are told many times in scripture to be like Christ. If we were only to listen and do just that the problem goes away.
I don’t own a gun – never have and never will. And if there was legislation to ban guns – yes I would vote in favor of that while also knowing that we would not have solved the problem. We would be kidding ourselves, and may even be playing into satan’s hands by aiming our focus on the effect and not the cause. We are a result of our own decisions to remove God from the secular world. Just this week my friend Emilie sent me this recording of a brief talk given by Paul Harvey in 1965. Twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate.
Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
They were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what to say.
They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
“Where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
“This is heaven.” declared a small boy. “we’re spending Christmas at God’s house.”
When what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their Savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King.
And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face.
And as if He could read all the questions she had,
He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad.”
Then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
“Let My power and presence re-enter this land!”

Then He and the children stood up without a sound.
“Come now my children, let me show you around.”
Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.

And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
“in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”
I wholeheartedly agree that banning guns is only a small part of fixing this horrific problem. Society has no regard for human life; it does not respect the life of the unborn or the elderly. We are of a generation that believes “if it’s not convenient” get rid of it. Violence is answered with more violence. Children’s games promote this. It’s no wonder that to annihilate the innocent comes easy. Until God is at the center of our lives, these atrocities will continue. God help us all.
“AWARENESS” I most certainly agree that guns are not the problem. There are just people out there that lack support from their family & friends. Everyone of these whackos seem to have the same type of people around them. There are always the quotes from people that knew them “we always knew he was a little off” Well how far “off” does one have to be before those close to them do something about it? If society as a whole made more of an effort to know our neighbors we might be more aware of who is next door.
So true. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people. An absolutely senseless tragedy occurred in Newtown and I will continue to pray for all of those personally affected. We need to change our focus to what truly matters and all draw closer to God.
Imagine what this world would be if this became our one focus –

We are the only things that stand in the way of what God has planned for us.
